Hamburg is back in The Gambia! 
Our chairwoman Anja is on site for four weeks and has a lot planned: First, the container from August will be unloaded and the donated goods distributed to the right places. But that’s just the beginning! She will also be making new contacts with donors and other organisations and assessing the progress on our compound (spoiler: things are really happening! 
).

2024
At the end of August, it was once again time for us to pack containers rather than suitcases! Together with ‘Wurzeln in zwei Welten e.V.’ and supported by Engagement Global, we were once again able to send a 40-foot container full of school furniture as well as forearm crutches, rollators, toilet chairs, bed sheets and towels (important for the hospitals) and hospital beds to The Gambia.
August
2024
Our home game took place from August 23 -25: The wonderful ALAFIA Festival in Altona. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces! We were also pleased to see everyone who was new to our stand, to exchange ideas and of course to see that our soaps were so well received. 🙂 In total, we raised incredible €736 in donations, which once again brings us a step closer. Many thanks for that!

The ‘An der Pinnau’ golf club donated the money it raised on the evening of the ‘Kölsch Open’ to the day care centre. We are overwhelmed and are delighted to have raised an incredible €2,250. A big thank you for this, especially to Mike!

2024
On June 1st and 2nd you can find us, as every year, at the altonale. We look forward to seeing many of you!
Edit June, 20 2024: The altonale was once again a complete success. This time we had homemade soaps in our luggage, which could be purchased for a donation.

2023
We are delighted that our fourth 40-foot container, filled to the brim with wheelchairs, walking aids and medical supplies, has arrived safely in The Gambia. This would not have been possible without the incredible support of our friends. Together with our partner organisation Saama Cairo Federation, our HAMBIA team is working on the ground to distribute the relief supplies and bring about positive change. There was even a programme about this on Gambian television.

2023
On 26 and 27 August 2023 we were back at the ALAFIA (Africa Festival) with our stand. This time not in Altona, but at AFROTOPIA in Barmbek. With lots of live music and delicious African food, we had another great exchange. Another step for the HAMBIA Support Centre.
Juli
2023
On 01 and 02 July 2023 you could meet us at the annual altonale. Once again, we had great conversations with you and our Wonjo tea and baobab powder, which we brought back from The Gambia, were very well received. The HAMBIA Support Centre project has also taken another step forward financially.

Update (20.05.23) We are thrilled with the great conversations we had and the positive energy in the room. The Gambian food was also a highlight. Overall it was a great evening and we are very pleased with how it went. We can’t wait to plan the next get-together.

2023
Progress is being made on the plot. Together with some volunteers from the neighbourhood, we demolished a dilapidated house to make room for the kitchen garden. The materials that could still be used were collected for later use.

2022
We organised a barbecue on our property in The Gambia for all interested parties and supporters. Influential people such as the heads of the women’s savings clubs (Kaffos) and the Alkalos (local mayors) were there and pledged their support.
September 2022
Anja and Hewan travel to The Gambia to discuss the current progress of the HAMBIA Support Centre with the Gambian board and discuss further steps. In addition, contact with the local families will be further expanded.

2022
We were able to welcome many of you to our stand at the Alafia (Africa Festival) in Hamburg-Altona. We had a great time with lots of exciting conversations and thanks to you we raised almost 500 euros for the HAMBIA Support Centre.
December 2021
The site visit has shown that the roofs in particular have been affected by the heavy rains in The Gambia. We are launching an appeal for donations on gofundme.
November 2021
At the beginning of November, Hewan and Ursula fly to The Gambia to discuss the necessary renovation work on the buildings with the Gambian craftsmen.
11 November 2021
We have found a plot of land for the support centre near Brikama, which was pre-financed by a benefactor. Thank you for that! We can now get started.
September 2021
The second container with rehabilitation material has arrived in The Gambia. The formalities in the harbour of Banjul strained the nerves of our Gambian friends. After some time, however, the materials could still be taken to where they were needed.
Summer
2020
Together with many friends and helpers, we collected mobility aids and rehabilitation materials in summer 2020. In cooperation with ASB-Ortverband Hamburg-Mitte e.V. and the Hamburg association “Wurzeln in zwei Welten e.V.”, the collected material was shipped to The Gambia. Thankfully, Engagement Global covered the transport costs. The container arrived in The Gambia shortly before Christmas. Anja, Hewan and Musa were on site and, together with part of the Gambian HAMBIA team, distributed the material to people and clinics in need.
